Business Philosophy & Catalogue Rates

The work of the Sunyata Group is dedicated to:
  • “Community” as our central focus for addressing extinction-level and/or critical issues with regards to social justice, economic, environmental, and spiritual well-being
  • “Compassion” as the foundation for all of our relationships and our work together — we commit to the compassion practice of Hearing, Seeing, and Loving (H-S-L) our selves; each other; our groups, organizations, and communities; and our ecosystems
  • “Collaboration” as our means for efficiently, fairly, and effectively working together to address extinction-level and/or critical issues — and to discover and promote the value propositions of being in generative relationships with each other

Our business philosophy is that the purpose of business is to serve the common good — while simultaneously benefiting the individual, the collective, and our ecosystems.

The operational manifestation of our business philosophy is to use:
  • Compassion as our business model
  • Wisdom as our business practice
  • Skillful Means as our business strategy

Accordingly, we see our work and all of our interactions, as part of a web of gift exchanges that should honor, support, and amplify the well-being and highest aspirations of the involved individuals and collectives in any situation, relationship, or place on the planet.

We base our financial interactions on the expectation that there is fair mutuality of value being exchanged — expressed as the cultivation of “Beloved Community”. This cultivation of community is founded in the understanding that “community” literally means “together” “gifting” (co — together + munis — gift exchange).

Hence our work occurs in the context and inspiration of “gift exchange”.

We periodically assess the market value of our contributions by establishing compensation and performance histories, and benchmarking ourselves against market standards for similar services. Thus we understand our value in the market, and we understand the performance expectations associated with that value.

While this does mean that our value-contribution is monetized (“dollarized”) in our catalogue labor rates, it does not necessarily mean that in exchange — in the “gift exchange” — we always require immediate currency-based compensation.

For example, in our non-profit work, when we have dealt with under-funded organizations and/or initiatives, we have frequently donated the majority of our services in exchange for a commitment to “Pay-It-Forward”, and to provide us with some form of an “honorarium”(stipend) to help defray our costs. Where the organization has the capability and/or a history of compensating at market rates, then we consider compensating us at our market rates as a fair exchange of value.

Likewise, in our for-profit work, we have frequently freely contributed our services with the understanding that somehow we would be fairly compensated (“gain-sharing”) for any cost savings, cost avoidances, and/or revenues resulting from our contributions.

And in our interpersonal work, we openly donate our services with the understanding that “Pay-It-Forward” is invoked, and that if increased material wealth results from our contributions — then we should be invited to participate (“gain-sharing”) in some form of compensation.

So our financial “Golden Rule” is: Always pay fairly for value received — even if this has not been requested or required. And likewise, we always hope to be fairly compensated for our value contributed — even if we have not explicitly requested it.

Obviously, we are only able to sustain ourselves to do this work by securing resources in the forms of non-profit donations, for-profit contracts and employment, personal gift contributions, and volunteer donations of time and material.

Our catalogue labor rates are based on the 2007 GSA IT Labor Rate Schedule. Some of the Sunyata Group Partners have been “vetted” through this process by performance on Federal contracts and/or activities at equivalent labor-skill categories.
